Swimming Day 1!

I did it! I went swimming this morning! And ya know what?? It felt AWESOME. I’m so pumped about it!

One of my 24 goals is to be able to swim for an hour straight. Fear not runner friends… I love me my long distance running and I’m def still planning on running the Cleveland and Denver Marathons in May and October of 2010 with Operation Jack. But after the Boulder Marathon in September of this year my knee was really busted. Stubbornly, I continued to train for the Northern Central Trail Half Marathon last week. But now it’s rest time for these weathered legs of mine. And I decided to start swimming in place of my usual workouts.

Swimming is NO joke! I woke up at 6am, drove up to school, and was in the pool by 6:45am swimming laps. I have mad respect for anyone who swims regularly. I consider myself to be in pretty decent shape (especially my lungs… running long distances at altitude) and I’m used to swimming underwater (my whole fam got SCUBA certified when we lived in Singapore), but swimming without fins or a regulator with always-available oxygen is TOUGH.

Working out and not being able to breath whenever you want?!? Are you kidding me? It’s so hard! I could only swim down, back, and down again before needing to pause for a quick break to catch my breathe. At first I struggled most with figuring out when to breath. I found breathing every two strokes was necessary. Then I started experimenting with exhaling out of my nose/mouth. Nose is definitely the best way to go. Then I had to make sure my body was somewhat straight. There’s a lot to keep in mind but it’s so much fun. I loved it. I swam for 30 minutes today (with little breaks from time to time, to catch my breathe)! Go me!

I definitely could use a few pointers on how to be more efficient in the water. Good thing for me, I’ve got an amazing cousin who DOMINATES in the pool (qualified for 6 state events). I’ll have to ask her for advice :)

My arms and shoulders feel great right now. A little sore/tired, but a GOOD sore/tired. I’m sure I’ll be much more sore tomorrow, but I’m dedicated to going to the pool at least 3 days a week. Mmm, I’m gonna start smelling like chlorine…Oh boy.

I love it, Erin! You go, girl! I dont know how you run for 4 hours at a time….

I have watched Alicyns practices and she swims continually for 2 hours. They do some dry land training and weight training before they enter the pool. They finish with 2-3 underwaters with 10 seconds to recover.

Keep up the great work! Gotta love the pool rat smell!
