26 minutes and the pain came back

I haven’t been able to write much last week because I’ve been focusing my time and effort on two things: 1. finishing up writing my first scientific paper (that we’re hoping to submit by the end of this week! yay!) and 2. trying to stay positive about my knee…

Last week, I wrote about my Turkey Day 5k triumphant return to running – 3.14 beautiful miles at a solid pace with no knee pain. Following Thanksgiving, my “back to running plan” had me move up to 26 minutes of running non-stop. This 20% increase was allowed/recommended by my physical therapist, so I eagerly increased my 22 minute runs to 26.

– Last Sunday’s (11/28) run felt great. I hit the time and felt super confident about how my knee could handle the increase.
– Rest on Monday, then while running on Tuesday (11/30), the all too familiar knee pain slowly crept back. A 2/10 type of discomfort.
– I decided to rest on Wednesday and Thursday, attempting to run again on Friday. The knee pain was present from the very first stride. A 4/10 type of pain.

I took the whole weekend off from running. I’m not sure what I did wrong or why the injury’s symptoms are popping up again. I’m trying to stay positive and active in other non-running ways, so I went for a beautiful 3hr hike to the top of one of Boulder’s Peaks (8461 ft) on Saturday.
(at least I can hike to such beautiful places!)

Other than that, I’m taking it easy. Maybe I’ll try running again tomorrow. We’ll see, we’ll see…

grrrrr, that is SO frustrating! to have experiences some good solid pain-free runs, only to get knocked back again.

I’m sorry you have knee pain again! Us women runners always have to deal with that! I hope it gets better soon. Looks like a beautiful hike!

Take it easy and I know it’ll be OK. You are a runner, it’ll get better. Totally annoying, but, I know you’ll be back in hard core awesome runner shape in no time.

PS. Either I’m hallucinating from the cough meds, or your blog now has little snow flurries on it. Please say it’s the latter?
