Wine tasting, off-leash training, and what I’m giving up for Lent


60 slow minutes on the pavement this morning. This week is my “back down” week of training (never knew 5K training plans had “back down” weeks before Coach Jeff came along). The miles felt good and it was lovely to have Weez’s company for the entire run :)


Over the weekend, I went wine-tasting in Estes Park with two of my girl friends. It was lovely and we made an entire afternoon of it. After the wine, we walked to a local lunch spot, chatted away over lunch for 2 hours, then walked to a candy shop for chocolate covered strawberries. Girl friends + wine = the best way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

Saturday night, Weez and I took Cabo to the trails to run around. For the first time, we let her off-leash. I was nervous at first, but she never strayed far and always came back after we called her. She’s gonna be a great backpacking/hiking companion this summer. Can’t wait!

Today is Fat Tuesday, which means tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and Lent begins. The cool thing is that things I give up for Lent, tend to change my habits afterwards (for the better), which is added incentive for me to give something up something good (aka, bad for me). In high school I gave up soda, and I’ve never been a big soda-drinker since. Another year I gave up cracking my knuckles, and now I don’t crack ’em anymore. But I’ve never tried to give up something really, really hard before. Until this year.

This year, I’ve decided to give up sweets. All sweets. Girl scout cookies, chocolate, candy from our home’s candy jar, sugary drinks (lemonade, chocolate milk), and even adding honey to my beloved morning tea. I’ve been pretty unhappy with my complexion as of late, so this’ll be a win-win situation because maybe that’ll help clear it up too.

But today? I’ve got one last day to get my sugar fix, so aside from the 1/4 box of girl scout cookies, I’ve got a slice of carrot cake to finish before midnight. Haha. Way to be a fatty, Erin. That’s what Fat Tuesday is for, right?!

If you have a dog, what helped give you confidence that your dog would be safe/ok off-leash?

    Re the dog, the only thing that gives me confidence that he’ll be OK off-leash is when we’re in the house.

      I still can’t believe you HAVE a dog… you never talk about him/her! I demand pictures! (and a puppy play date at your sweet new place when you and your fam settle in)

    I haven’t decided what I’m giving up for Lent yet… I should probably get on that. I admire you for giving up all sweets. I think I’d have to allow certain things for sure. My sweet tooth knows no bounds!

    i need to join you on the giving up sweets! makin this booty huge! however… lent falls on my birthday week.. so can i start next tuesday and just go a week longer.. ;) :)
