Spicing it up with HIIT, cycle, and zumba

I love being a part of a university campus… I love the slow slog of hungover youth when I’m in a hurry to a meeting across campus… I love jumping out of the way of skateboarders as they come flying by… I love the grungy, cheap food on The Hill… I love the fashion choices sorority girls make these days.

But mostly, I love the  perks that come along with being considered a student (grad student, ftw!). For example: discounted Rec Center passes. For only $150 for the entire semester, I can hit up the rec center anytime I want, and I have unlimited access to all the fitness classes offered (kickboxing, abs, zumba, strength conditioning, yoga, pilates, HIIT, cycle, masters swim, you name it). What a deal, right?!

Because of this, I’ve jumped into 3 different workout classes for the semester:

  • M/W 6:30-7:30AM HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)
  • M/W 5:30-6:30PM Cycle
  • T/Th 6:30-7:30PM Zumba

It’s been 3 weeks, and I’m loving every second of each class.

HIIT is SUPER intense. It’s basically like bootcamp. Burpees, squats with weights, jumping lunges, abs, pushups, plyos. I leave every class with shaking legs and burning lungs. It’s super intense (hence, the name), and I absolutely love it.

Cycle is probably my fave of the three. One hour of self-imposed quad thrashing. The great part about spin, is that you can make it as hard or as easy as you want on yourself. Because of that, it’s a solid mental workout, too. The teacher is fantastic, the music is fun and loud, and the workout is great cross training for running.

Zumba… haha… oh, zumba. It’s like hip hop dancing to fun, fast, remix-style Latin music. A lot of shimmy’ing, booty shaking, and jumping/spinning. I’ll admit, I would never go to this class if it weren’t for my friend who encourages me to join her :) Though I can follow the rhythm and beat, I’m about the least sexy dancer you’ll ever meet. I catch glimpses of myself in the mirror and laugh out of embarrassment. But. It’s still a blast, and I’m glad I have a friend to go with. Totally worth it.

I love spicing up my workout schedule with these new fitness classes. I did masters swim two years ago, but I already love these three classes even more. I look forward to (hopefully) seeing a difference in my muscle definition and coordination as the semester progresses.

Have you ever taken HITT, Cycle, or Zumba classes?
What’s one of the perks of your current job?

I love the University gym too. Mine is included in my RAship, so bonus there. I love some of the eye candy and constant entertainment that comes with treadmill running. Like yesterday “Call Me Maybe” came on the radio, so every scrawny freshman trying to bulk up had to stop and do the hand gestures because he is “so cool.” I saw your tweet yesterday about Zumba and was a bit surprised. Then again, I don’t know you that well.

I’m a big fan of workin’ out, and I’m typically making fun of myself in one way or another… so I figure zumba is just another fun thing to try :)

  2. Best part is that CU has a sweet gym! I used to use that rock wall all the time! Sigh. Miss that place :)

I love HIIT workouts! I do them 4x/week! And I’ve really gotten into cycling the last several months and I LOVE it! Hubby now does it with me too :)
